On June 7, 2019, at the Nisonger Center in Ohio, USA, an international research meeting on the support for students with developmental disabilities in Japan and the United States was held. Professors Kazunori Takeda, Fumiyuki Noro, Associate Prof. Hiroki Yoneda, Ginga Sasaki, Assistant Prof. Hisae Miyauchi and Researcher Ayaka Sueyoshi who belong to Faculty of Human Sciences, Unitvesity of Tsukuba participated. The Nisonger Center, part of the Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center Neurological Institute, provides the community with support and education for children and adults with developmental disabilities and\/or other disabilities, as well as research opportunities for students and clinical researchers. At the meeting, Professor Marc J. Tass\u00e9 and Professor Margaretha Izzo in the Nisonger Center shared their latest works of support practices and research during the transition period from high school to university and from school to work. We also visited Nisonger Center’s research and clinical facilities.<\/p>\n

This meeting is part of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A) “Realization of Neuro-Diversity by Optimisation of Reasonable Accommodation and Support Model in University (18H03653)” (Research leader: Kazunori Takeda). This was an opportunity to obtain valuable information for applied research on building support models at Japanese universities. In the future, based on the knowledge gained at this meeting, we plan to develop a support system for students with developmental disabilities in Japan.<\/p>\n
