We spend a third of our lives sleeping. What are possible reasons for this? Although sleep may serve many physiological functions (e.g., homeostasis – energy conservation, restoration, regeneration), it has also been hypothesized to play a crucial role in memory consolidation.\u00a0 Much of the evidence for this, however, has been \u2018soft\u2019 or correlational: dreaming; sleep deprivation induced memory deficits;\u00a0 etc.\u00a0 Recently, more concrete evidence in support of memory consolidation in sleep has been obtained.\u00a0 This includes electrophysiological (both field potential and single unit recordings), brain imaging as well as molecular studies.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It has been known for a long time that the brain is not at rest in sleep. This is true not only for brain nuclei involved in sleep itself but other regions as well, including hippocampus and neocortex.\u00a0 Possible functions for the enhanced neuronal activity, however, are not clear.\u00a0 Perhaps the first \u2018hard\u2019 evidence for memory consolidation in sleep was the discovery of \u2018neuronal re-activation\u2019 (Pavlides and Winson, J Neurosci<\/em> 9: 2907\u20132918, 1989).\u00a0 That is, neuronal populations active in learning during the awake state become re-activated again in sleep.\u00a0 This points to a memory consolidation role for sleep.\u00a0 Further evidence includes molecular studies showing that various genes become activated in sleep following awake learning (Ribeiro, S., et al. Learn Mem<\/em> 6: 500\u2013508, 1999).
