タイトル:「To Slumber, Perchance to Remember」

We spend a third of our lives sleeping. What are possible reasons for this? Although sleep may serve many physiological functions (e.g., homeostasis - energy conservation, restoration, regeneration), it has also been hypothesized to play a crucial role in memory consolidation.  Much of the evidence for this, however, has been ‘soft’ or correlational: dreaming; sleep deprivation induced memory deficits;  etc.  Recently, more concrete evidence in support of memory consolidation in sleep has been obtained.  This includes electrophysiological (both field potential and single unit recordings), brain imaging as well as molecular studies.

It has been known for a long time that the brain is not at rest in sleep. This is true not only for brain nuclei involved in sleep itself but other regions as well, including hippocampus and neocortex.  Possible functions for the enhanced neuronal activity, however, are not clear.  Perhaps the first ‘hard’ evidence for memory consolidation in sleep was the discovery of ‘neuronal re-activation’ (Pavlides and Winson, J Neurosci 9: 2907–2918, 1989).  That is, neuronal populations active in learning during the awake state become re-activated again in sleep.  This points to a memory consolidation role for sleep.  Further evidence includes molecular studies showing that various genes become activated in sleep following awake learning (Ribeiro, S., et al. Learn Mem 6: 500–508, 1999). The lecture will go over some of this evidence and ongoing research projects in the lab.
